NOTES: This recording is only of the songs, ballets and other musical sections. "Simple" switches to the cast recording for much of the dialogue. The person who recorded this had a recorder that could record only so much before the tape needed to be changed so he tried to record as little of a show as possible. (Portable tape recorders that could record for longer stretches were still quite expensive in 1964.) This recording includes "There Won't Be Trumpets" (sounding as if it came from an LP issue), even though it was cut from the production before it opened. Also, "See What It Gets You" comes from the cast recording (it also sounds like it's from an LP). This recording does include material that wasn't included on the cast recording, including the only recording of the "Don't" ballet. This is especially significant as the version heard on Broadway included dialogue that's not in the published script or the published score.

TRADER'S NOTES: Songs only.

NOTES: Its original title, Holly Golightly, was changed when it started previews on December 12, 1966 on Broadway at the Majestic Theatre. Despite a healthy advance sale and much audience anticipation, it closed four nights later without having officially opened. Merrick placed an infamous ad in The New York Times, announcing that he shut down the production "rather than subject the drama critics and the public to an excruciatingly boring evening." Never officially opened. Features Edward Albee's libretto after replacing Abe Burrows.

NOTES: This recording is sometimes identified as documenting opening night (April 26, 1970), but it seems likely to be the one recorded on May 2, 1970, listed in David Hummel's The Collector's Guide to the American Musical Theatre. Steve Elmore sings David's part in "Sorry-Grateful" possibly because of the understudy for David going on.

A few small mishaps happen, most notably the moving set once drags a bench off the stage along with it, which George Blagden then carries back to where it belongs, a door didn't open in time, and during Getting Married Today one of the drawers of the fridge fell out, which they stuffed back in but it kept falling back out when they open the fridge.

CAST: Dorothy Collins (Sally Durant Plummer), Alexis Smith (Phyllis Rogers Stone), Gene Nelson (Buddy Plummer), John McMartin (Benjamin Stone), Yvonne DeCarlo (Carlotta Campion), Ethel Shutta (Hattie Walker), Fifi D’Orsay (Solange LaFitte)

NOTES: Soundboard. The final section of "Waiting for the Girls Upstairs" (after the exit of the young characters) seems to have been unrecorded. Circulating copies dub in that final section from the cast recording. Gene Nelson has major lyric problems during "The God-Why-Don't-You-Love-Me Blues" in the sections with "Margie" and "Sally." He does some of the "Sally" section with "Margie," and he does some of the "Margie" section with "Sally," and sometimes, realizing how lost he is but unable to fix things, he just doesn't sing at all.
This recording is commonly labeled as "second preview." Fixing a date for this performance has proved elusive. It has circulated with various dates affixed to it (including March 28, April 2, April 4, August 2), none of which seems to be right based on the evidence within the performance. The best guess at this moment is that two New York preview performances were edited together, though if that's the case, it remains puzzling why "Waiting for the Girls Upstairs" is incomplete and why a different version of "The God-Why-Don't-You-Love-Me Blues" wasn't used.
This copy circulates with a reprise of the second half of "Who's That Woman?" edited in after the song finishes. This addition seems to have been intended to simulate the way the show was performed at the first Broadway preview (March 24, 1971), when it was performed with an intermission that came after "Who's That Woman?" The second act then started with a reprise of the second half of the number. The show was never again performed that way.

The half-reprise has clearly been edited in from another performance than the one heard on the rest of the recording. We can tell that the rest of this recording was not made at that first preview for several reasons, starting with the fact that it's clearly Arnold Moss as Weismann on this recording, but Moss didn't join the cast till a couple of days later.
The half-reprise probably wasn't recorded at the first preview. It seems to just be an edited-down version of a complete performance of the song. Although three live recordings of the Broadway run (including this sound-system recording) are in circulation, the edited version of "Who's That Woman?" doesn't come from any recording that we've found. The half-reprise seems to be from an audience recording so it's clearly not edited from the performance of the song on the sound-system recording proper. And it doesn't match up with either the performance from Dec. 18, 1971, nor with the performance from April 5, 1972. One oddity of the half-reprise performance is that the taps are much less loud than any of the other live recordings we have of the show.

NOTES: The 1982 North Shore Music Theatre production (also starring Dolores Gray) often circulates as being from the  1974 West End production, creating some question as to whether or not the West End recording actually exists.  There is a very distinctive flat note by one of the horns at the start of the overture which identifies the NSMT recording. This production was part of a regional tour that included: North Shore Music Theatre, Beverly MA (July 12-24); Cape Cod Melody Tent, Hyannis MA (July 26-31); Corning Summer Theater, Corning NY (Aug. 2-7).

Great historical quality.

NOTES: The Dream Engine was a musical created by Jim Steinman in 1969 when he was a senior student of Amherst College. The Dream Engine, set in a satirical-dystopian 1969, is the story of a young boy named Baal who, along with his rebel fellows, doesn't accept the restraints and limits of their society. Baal is the leader of a self-assembled group of wild boys called The Tribe, whose mortal enemies are Max and Emily, the parents of the Girl, a young woman with whom Baal has fallen in love. Amazingly, an entire performance of the play from May 1969 was recorded, there was only 1 run of the play but 3 were planned, in February 1970 Jim sought out the New York Shakespeare Festival, he was considered but ultimately denied. There was an arena stage version written in April 1971 and planned for 1972 but cancelled due to creative differences. In 1974 Steinman rewrote The Dream Engine into Neverland, which held a workshop at the Kennedy Center in 1977.

NOTES: Recorded before the show had ever been staged. Some minor plot differences and some different lyrics, and includes some songs that never made it to the show we know and love today (example: "As If By Magic", part of a plot line that followed closer to the original novel.) No orchestra - the instrumental is just a piano backing everything. Stage directions spoken (example going into ALAYM: "Scene four, a cheap rented room." Recently replaced with a new, clearer, copy—this one including somewhere around 30 tracks, compared to 12.
